With the Winter season and the colder nights drawing in, many of us will be using some form of wood-burner to keep warm. One question that comes to mind concerns tips for fire lighting, and more specifically, ways of avoiding the use of kerosene-based products.

Products like “If you care” lighters from Able and Cole — made from FSC-certified wood and 100% non-GMO vegetable oil are certainly environmentally friendly — there are other methods to replace fire-lighters made with kerosene. One simple method is to use the shells of pistachios. If you enjoy pistachio nuts, then remember to keep the empty shells in a bag. When you lay your next fire, simply sprinkle a handful or two on. They catch fire easily and burn very well!
